In my clinic, I estimate that around 90% of patients who come to see me list ‘weight loss’ as one of their key areas they are needing support with.  And while there are more than a few weight-loss strategies around (all promising miraculous results), the reality is that most of them fail in the long-term.  Not only is this extremely disheartening after putting a LOT of effort into watching what you are eating, and getting your gym on, it isn’t good for your body in the long run to lose weight and regain it time and time again.

I totally get it.  Although I’ve been a qualified nutritionist for almost a decade, I too find that the weight can creep on far too easily, and be difficult to take off….even though I eat well (most of the time!) and look after myself.  I’ve always struggled with a metabolism that isn’t quite where it needs to be, and have had the somewhat unique experience of knowing what it feels like to be a size 10…. and a size 18….and everywhere in between.  I know that those extra kilos are more than just an inconvenience – they affect your self-confidence, your energy and your moods and how you feel about yourself.  And in my clinic, I also see more than a few patients who are very frustrated that the scales haven’t budged – even when they’ve tried various methods of shifting unwanted kilos…including those that have worked for their friend, their mother or their hairdresser.

This is where the metabolism comes into play.  Your metabolism controls how fast you burn your food for energy – which at the end of the day determines how much you can eat without putting on weight.  I’m sure you can think of someone you know who can eat like a horse without gaining an ounce, and someone else (perhaps yourself) who just needs to look at food sideways for the jeans to instantly become tighter.  The reality is that everyone has a different metabolism that is unique to them – which means it doesn’t make a lot of sense to take a one-size fits-all approach to weight loss.
