This week on my page I posted about Silicone Ziplock Pouches as an alternative to disposable plastic ones. I get asked about Silicone a lot. Is it food safe? Is it heat resistant? Is it recyclable?
It’s made from sand, right?
To be honest, it took me a long time to come round to Silicone as an ecofriendly option for food storage and baking, and to actually stock Silicone products in my store. I was dubious, so I did my research and here is what I found:
Despite what you might have heard, silicone doesn’t just come from sand at the beach. Instead, it’s actually a product of three different things: Silica: the raw, natural material; Silicon: the base element of silica; Silicone: the by-product of heating silicon.
Silicone is not biodegradable but can be easily recycled – but only by specialised recycling companies who repurpose it into things like mulch for playgrounds. This process can be carried out multiple times and many companies have take-back programs to make things easier. Look out for Terracycle participants
Silicone that is sold to consumers as kitchen products must meet food safety standards. In Australia, Silicone products must meet FDA (Food & Drug Administration) testing requirements. The most stringent testing is done in Germany and France through their LFGB (Foods, Consumer Goods and Feedstuffs Code). This does make the Silicone products within this category more expensive, but also the highest quality.
How do you tell if the Silicone in your product is high grade? Do the Pinch Test! Pinch or twist a flat surface of a silicone product. If white shows through, it’s an indication that a filler has been used and it’s not pure.
Silicone is food safe at both hot and cold temperatures so suitable for storing all sorts of food in the pantry, fridge or freezer, as well as for baking.
Silicone is a great environmentally friendly alternative to plastic because it is reusable, washable, non-toxic and recyclable. Silicone products are a smart move when it comes to protecting the health of you and your family, plus the planet too
REUSE plastic ziplock bags as much as possible before disposing in the soft plastic recycling bin at your local supermarket. Consider swapping to reusable silicone ziplock bags next time you finish a pack
While plastic ziplock bags don’t have to necessarily be “single use”, (they are easily hand washed and air dried for repeat use, until they tear, break, or lose their seal), pure Silicone Ziplock Bags are an eco-friendly, non-toxic, food safe alternative
As long as they are made out of 100% silicone, there is no BPA or other nasty chemicals lurking in the product
They’re perfect for organising, repackaging, transporting, storing and protecting food and snacks
They are leakproof and completely airtight and can be sealed, opened and resealed repeatedly, keeping food fresh
They stand up to hot and cold temperatures so you can pretty much pack any type of food or snack in them
Reusable ziplock bags eliminate the need for single-use plastics and reduce your carbon footprint
Plastic is no longer the only option when it comes to storing and transporting food
Reusable ziplock bags are better for the planet and our bodies
