Mary Reid, owner and creative director of Merivale Cakes & Crafts, has built her reputation as a national champion, international judge and cake tour director, and perfectionist in the cake world by following her dreams, studying, being highly determined and sheer hard work.

Mary’s love of this exacting art form began with a cake decorating class at Ingham TAFE in North Queensland in her teens. Her distinguished career reflects a woman of many talents, with high level customer service, communication, organizational, teaching and mentoring skills.

Often, the varied aspects of one’s life journey are only acknowledged by those who touch a particular aspect at a particular time.  Thankfully, Mary had the foresight to capture her own life’s journey in her uniquely crafted book “CAUTION! Wedding Cake on Board”.

This book was intended to be the culmination of her 50 year cake journey – but the pandemic got in the way. In mid-2020 due to public demand Mary came out of retirement to conduct further training and to support the Wedding Industry Collaboration which aimed to present Toowoomba as a national wedding destination region.

I will not spoil your reading enjoyment of travelling through the pages of Mary’s globe-trotting caking journeys with her students or her intriguing story-telling cake-affairs with her wedding couples. You need to buy her heartfelt book, read her real-life stories, to experience her sheer love of supporting all things ‘community’.

Loyal, happy customers; superior customer service (e.g. ABIA rating 98%pa over 14 years) for her clients and students; community engagement second to none; incredible vision; corporate career-learnt strategic marketing skills; ongoing commitment to small business and the development of strategic projects; mentoring upcoming business entrepreneurs and leaders; and a networking extraordinaire.

Mary is a true matriarch for the wedding industry, as she continues to advocate with the key business leaders and political influencers to move the industry forward, and is its Number 1 Supporter in the region.

Supporting Kim Cahill’s Toowoomba & Darling Downs advocacy for small and micro businesses, Mary’s ABIA Weddings Australia membership (of almost 20years) was instrumental in establishing the TDD/ABIA partnership.

As a result the upcoming Wedding Industry and Business Leaders Breakfast on Friday July 9th at the Oaks in Ruthven Street will provide some strategic regional announcements, and outcomes, for all parties.

Mary Reid you are – the icing on the cake!
